The Grandparent Childcare Agreement
Most grandparent care is a few hours a week. The fights start when nobody has written down the cookie, the swat, or the money.
Write the week down before it doubles. Who drives, who disciplines, what your child eats, whether you pay, and how either of you can pause.
Priya Raman writes about money, childcare logistics, and the practical math of building a family without losing your footing.

Ten hours does not feel like a contract
Your dad moved the car seat into his car on Sunday. He has told his brother he has the baby on Tuesdays. You have a different Tuesday in mind: home by 3, and a text if anything goes sideways.
If your mother was the one who moved the seat, ask her the same thing. What time is Tuesday over?
In the Federal Reserve's 2025 household survey, published in May 2026, most unpaid childcare that parents used was under 10 hours that week, and grandparents were the people they named most often. Ten hours still needs a page. You will want it when two afternoons become four, or a stomach bug lands on a day you cannot miss.
Sarah Kerman led a survey of 3,283 grandparents for AARP Research, published in June 2026. In AARP's summary, 15 percent provide care daily or almost every day. Among those who help, the average is about 10 hours a week.
A standing Tuesday needs one page. Every weekday needs another.
Some families announce the help before anyone has agreed to the terms. The car seat is the announcement. The page is how you accept the help and still say what happens on a fever morning.
If your parents are flying in, put the return date in that first conversation, while the suitcase is still in the hall.
Write the week you mean
Name the days, the clock times, and who drives. "Whenever you need me" is how a two-hour favor becomes a workweek.
Start with the ordinary week. Then add the exceptions you can already see: school holidays, your travel, their doctor's appointments, the week another grandchild is also in town.
If the help is one afternoon, write one afternoon. A grandparent who heard "Tuesdays" should not find out in October that you meant every weekday.
The backup belongs on that same page. If they wake up sick, who has the child, and by what time will someone say so.
In that Federal Reserve survey, 58 percent of working single parents used unpaid care, against 44 percent of parents overall. Those mornings have the least room. Send the text the night before, not at 7:10 from the driveway.
If both of you work, mark which meeting can move. Put that next to the pickup time.
One rule when you are not in the room
Your child will ask your dad for the yes you already refused. He is the one in the room. Give him a sentence he can repeat.
Robert Sege and Benjamin Siegel, pediatricians, led the American Academy of Pediatrics' 2018 policy on discipline. It says not to spank, and to keep the consequence steady no matter which adult is there. Leave the PDF in the drawer. Write down no hitting, and no new punishment because the shoes are not going on.
A text he can keep: "If the shoes are not going on, text us. Please don't add a consequence we have not talked about."
If he raised you under a different rule, say that once. "You did what you knew. We are doing this part differently, and we need you with us on it." Stop there. Another paragraph and you are arguing about your own childhood while the shoes are still in the hall.
The tablet needs its own sentence, before the first Tuesday. If it is only for the car, say so. A crying child and a nearby screen is an easy problem to solve the wrong way.
The kitchen list
Three lines will do: the allergy, the foods that are easy to choke on at this age, and what you have decided about sweets.
Tape the pediatrician's list inside the cabinet he actually opens. If he likes to cook, your child is probably glad. The list lets lunch be his cooking and still match what the doctor said.
"One small sweet after lunch is fine. A second one waits for us." Tell him why the second one waits. An allergy is a reason. So is the crash you are the one who handles at 5. A preference you never say out loud just shows up as a fight at pickup.
New foods can wait for a text. "We are trying eggs next week. Today, stick to the list."
If he wants to make a family recipe, the recipe can stay his. You are deciding the timing, the portion, and anything a doctor took off the list.
Say the number
Most of these hours are a gift. Some of them should come with a number. Ten hours a week, for a year, is a lot of someone's knees.
If you pay, write the amount, the day, and what it covers. One version, not a recommendation: $200 on Fridays for two full days, plus the groceries he bought for your child. Birthday money goes in a different envelope, so nobody has to guess which one was the wage.
Say it before the first Tuesday. "We can do $200 a week. If that is too light, tell us now." If you wait, December arrives with the help already given and a year nobody priced.
The federal rules are in IRS Publication 926 for 2026 and on the child and dependent care credit page. Below is the ordinary case. Anything messier belongs with a preparer. That includes state unemployment tax, which this does not cover.
If you are married and your spouse can care for the child, wages you pay your own parent generally do not count for Social Security, Medicare, or federal unemployment tax. That holds even above the $3,000 household-employee line in the guide.
Social Security and Medicare can still apply, and only when both parts are true. Your parent is caring for your child under 18, or for a child who needs an adult's care for at least four continuous weeks in the quarter. And you are divorced and have not remarried, widowed, or living with a spouse whose condition keeps them from caring for the child for those same four weeks.
Federal unemployment tax still leaves a parent's wages out, even in that case. The cash can be taxable income on your parent's return either way.
Your own credit is a separate form. You generally cannot count money paid to your spouse, to your child's parent, to someone you claim as a dependent, or to your own child under 19 at the end of the year. A grandparent who is not your dependent can be the provider. Form 2441 asks for their name, address, and taxpayer identification number.
For 2026 the credit is 20 to 50 percent of qualifying expenses, on up to $3,000 for one child and $6,000 for two or more. At the top that is $1,500 or $3,000, and it cannot be more than the tax you owe. You, and your spouse if you file jointly, have to be working or looking for work.
If an employer excludes dependent-care benefits, the 2026 cap is $7,500. Those dollars generally reduce the expenses you can use for the credit. Paying a grandparent produces the credit only when the form says so.
When the plan has to change
Put a date on the page about six weeks out. When it arrives, talk about the week you actually lived, including the afternoon that ran long.
What ends these arrangements is usually ordinary: a hip, a new shift, a second baby, the first day of school. Sometimes the person watching your toddler is the same person your own parent now needs in the afternoon. A visit with a return ticket can get asked to stay through the year.
Agree on the sentence while everyone is still on time for work. "Either of us can pause this with two weeks' notice. If someone is hurt or sick, it pauses the same day."
If they need to stop, let the schedule stop. In the AARP Research write-up of Kerman's survey, 13 percent of grandparents said the care leaves them physically taxed, and 26 percent said they feel taxed and energized at the same time.
Skip the speech about how much you were counting on them. Call the backup you wrote down the first week, so Tuesday still has an adult in it.
| Line | The question | One sentence you can edit |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | Which days, what times, who drives, who is the backup | Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 to 5. We do drop-off. If you are sick, text the night before and we call the sitter. |
| Discipline | What is off limits when you are not in the room | No hitting and no new punishments. If the shoes are not going on, text us. |
| Food | Allergy, choking risks, the treat | Peanuts are out. The pediatrician list is on the cabinet. One small sweet after lunch is fine. |
| Money | Stipend, groceries, what stays a gift | $200 on Fridays for those two days, plus child groceries. Birthday money is separate. Confirm tax with a preparer. |
| Changes | Notice, health, the review date | Either of us can pause with two weeks' notice. A health problem pauses it the same day. We reread this on [date]. |
A page for your household to edit, not a legal form. The hours context is from the Federal Reserve's 2025 household survey. Tax treatment of wages paid to a parent is in IRS Publication 926 for 2026. The $200 figure is an example.
