Before You Have Kids Together

Caregiving, money, religion, grandparents, and whose career bends. Say it while you can still change your mind.

Ask who leaves at 3:30, who gets on a plane if a parent falls, and what a grandmother's help includes, before a pregnancy answers for you.

Say it on a Tuesday

You can love someone for years and still not know who leaves at 3:30.

In March 2026, Pew Research Center asked full-time working parents whether being a parent made it harder to advance at work. Fifty-two percent of the mothers said it did. Thirty-eight percent of the fathers said it did.

Couples say they will both bend. Then the sick day and the trip for a promotion land on the same person, and nobody remembers agreeing to that.

If you are still dating, or you keep saying someday, ask before a pregnancy turns it into a schedule.

Whose job bends

Ask for a name, and for a date when you will look again.

"If one of us leaves at 3:30 for a year, it is me. We talk again when the baby turns one." A year is a different promise from "until they start school."

The person who steps back is often the one who already earns less. Keep their name on the savings. They should still get a say when a job change comes up.

A pause with no end date starts to look like a personality, and it is hard to argue with a personality.

What that pause does to a paycheck is in Her Pay Slips in the Years Care Starts. You can read the numbers later. Tonight, get the name.

The money already spoken for

Before you price a daycare, look at the transfer you already send a parent overseas, the one you called temporary in 2019.

A baby does not cancel it. Ask what stays, and who feels the shame if the amount drops.

Child Care Aware's national figure, the one it published as the 2025 average, is $13,184. That number blends infants with 4-year-olds, and centers with care in someone's home. A baby in a center costs more.

The price that belongs in this talk is the one in your city. We separated the average from the infant bill in The $13,184 Average Is Not the Infant Bill.

Then listen for the plan under the number. One of you may be counting on a grandmother's afternoons. The other may be counting on both paychecks and a center. Say which one you mean before you tour a place.

A parent and a baby in the same year

The same years can hold a toddler and a parent who needs a ride to the doctor.

To land in Pew's count, someone had a parent 65 or older and, at the same time, a child under 18 or a grown child they had helped with money in the past year.

The survey ran September 2 to 8, 2025. A quarter of U.S. adults qualified. Among people in their 40s, it was 54 percent.

Who gets on the plane? If "we will figure it out" means your sister, say her name. If both of you are the only one in this country, you cannot both be the person who drops everything.

Before you build a rotation, find out whether you are picturing the same person at the airport. Planning for Kids When Your Parents Also Need Support is the longer version of that plan.

What you will actually keep

In Pew's survey of 7,006 Asian American adults, taken from July 2022 through January 2023, 32 percent had no religious affiliation and 34 percent were Christian.

Seventy-seven percent said they would be comfortable if a close family member married outside their faith. The question was about a marriage, so it will not tell you what a child does on Sunday morning.

If one of you stays close to a tradition because your parents do, the child will see who hosts. Agree on your own house before a grandparent books the priest, the monk, or the church.

What "my mom will help" means

"My mom will help" can mean Tuesday and Thursday. It can also mean she gives up her apartment.

Ask how many days, in whose house, and who still decides bedtime and what the child eats. If she will correct you in your own kitchen, say so now, before that becomes the way the house works.

If the plan is that someone moves, the ticket and the job they leave belong in the same conversation. So does their own parent, the one who will not be down the street anymore.

Put an end date on the stay, and agree on a sentence for when the week is too much.

The hours and the house rules are in The Grandparent Childcare Agreement. What families run into after the move is in The Move for the Grandbaby Is a Job.

If someone leaves their city for your baby, leave them an afternoon that is still theirs.

One question, then stop

You will not finish this in one night. Pick the question that already makes one of you go quiet.

You can send it before you are sitting across the table. "If your parent needed daily help the same year we had a baby, what would we do?"

Stop when someone gets sharp. That is enough for this week.
