Heritage Baby Name Explorers

Naming a child in North America when elders expect a heritage name and teachers expect something they can read aloud is its own negotiation. These explorers let you filter by meaning, gender, and romanization before the family group chat explodes.

Each list mixes common contemporary names with classic roots. Meanings come from standard dictionary glosses and everyday usage, not fortune-telling sites. Where we cite history or statistics, sources are linked in the page notes.

How to use these lists

Search English meaning words ("peace", "jade", "bright") or try romanization fragments ("Min", "Hana", "Yuki"). Shortlist three to five names, then test them with your partner: voicemail greeting, substitute teacher roll call, and the relative who will mispronounce it on purpose anyway.

Naming is more than a list. Read our guide on naming a baby in a mixed couple, check zodiac birth year cutoffs if elders tie names to the lunar calendar, and browse parenting by culture hubs for language and tradition context, including Indian, Filipino, and Vietnamese pages.
